When the pipe is the problem

Sewer Line Repair in Ogden, Utah

Sometimes the line really is damaged. When that happens you should see the footage, understand the options, and get a straight account of what is actually required.

When this is the answer

01

Camera footage showing a break or separation

A structural fault. Cleaning cannot address it.

02

Repeated backups at the same point in the line

Worth looking at whether the pipe has lost grade or integrity there.

03

Ground settling or a wet patch over the line

Can indicate water escaping the pipe below.

04

A line that fails again immediately after clearing

Suggests the pipe is no longer holding its shape.

Drains and sewers only

Not a plumbing company with a drain page. This is the whole job.

A camera on recurring calls

If a drain has backed up before, guessing at it twice is not a plan.

Cast iron, clay lateral, hard water scale, roots. The local failure modes.

What actually warrants a repair

A break, a collapse, a joint that has separated, or a section that has lost its grade badly enough that cleaning cannot keep it clear. Those are structural problems, and no amount of maintenance resolves them.

Repeated blockages, on their own, are not on that list. A line can clog four times a year and be structurally sound, and in that case the answer is to remove what is causing the clogs rather than to replace the pipe carrying them.

Seeing it before deciding

Excavation is expensive and disruptive, so the standard we hold ourselves to is simple: you should see the footage of the fault before you agree to anything.

If we cannot show you the specific thing that requires the work, we have not made the case for it. That applies to us as much as to anyone else quoting you.

Spot repair against full replacement

A single failed joint under a driveway is a different job from a lateral that has deteriorated along its whole length. The first is often a spot repair. The second may genuinely need the line replaced.

The camera is what separates them, and the difference in cost between the two is large enough that it is worth establishing which one you have.

Trenchless against excavation

Depending on the fault and the condition of the host pipe, lining or bursting can sometimes avoid a full dig. What is possible depends on what the camera shows, and it is not always possible. Anyone offering a method before looking is guessing.

What a fair quote contains

The specific fault, its distance from the house, footage you can watch, and a plain account of what would happen if the line were cleaned instead. If any of those is missing, ask for it before agreeing to anything.

Getting a second opinion

On a five-figure quote, a second look costs very little by comparison. We are comfortable with you getting one, and we would suggest the same about anybody else’s quote including ours.

A drain technician feeding a cable into an open sewer cleanout in the front lawn of an older Ogden home.

Look first. Then clear it.

Most drain calls run the same four steps. The order matters: everything we recommend comes after we have seen the line, not before.

  1. 01

    Ask

What is the drain doing, which fixtures are affected, how old is the house, has it happened before. Five minutes on the phone usually narrows it to two possibilities.

You get a straight answer about whether this needs a visit.

  2. 02

    Look

On anything recurring, the camera goes in before the cable does. We find where the restriction is and what is causing it.

You watch the same screen we do.

  3. 03

    Clear

Cable, jetter or descaler, chosen for what we actually found. Grease gets cut out, not punched through.

The line is open, and the cause is gone with it.

  4. 04

    Show

A second camera pass after the work, so you can see the pipe you are left with, including when the answer is that nothing is wrong with it.

You know the condition of your line, not just that the water moved.

What the camera actually shows

You watch the same screen we do. These are the three things we find most often behind a drain that will not stay clear.

Root intrusion. Roots at a clay joint. Common under mature trees on Ogden's older streets.

Mineral scale. Cast iron closed down by hard water scale. Regularly mistaken for a clog.

Questions we get asked

Do you always have to dig?

No. Depending on the fault and the pipe, trenchless options exist. What is possible depends on what the camera shows.

How do I know the repair is genuinely needed?

You should see the footage of the specific fault. If nobody can show you the thing that requires the work, the case has not been made.

How long does a repair take?

A spot repair is often a day. A full lateral replacement is longer and depends on length, depth and what is above the line.

Will my yard be destroyed?

Excavation disturbs ground, and we will be specific about where and how much before starting rather than after.

Is a recurring clog enough reason to replace a line?

No. That is the most common reason a replacement gets sold when it is not required. A line can block repeatedly and still be structurally sound.

Not sure if this is what you have?

Tell us what the drain is doing. We will tell you what usually causes that pattern before you commit to anything.

What is the drain doing?

What is the drain doing?

Worth saying up front. If the pipe turns out to be healthy, we will tell you that. We do not turn a drain cleaning call into a sewer replacement pitch.

Backing up right now? (801) 643-5784

What we do when the pipe is fine

No fault found

Sometimes the camera goes down a line that has backed up three times and finds nothing wrong with the pipe. Grease, or roots at one joint, or a fixture that was never vented properly. The pipe itself is sound.

When that happens we clean it properly, tell you what caused it, and leave. That is the whole visit. A recurring clog is not evidence that a sewer needs replacing, and we are not going to say it is.

Tell us what the drain is doing

Describe the symptom and we will tell you what usually causes it. If it needs a look, we will come and look.

No call-out pressure and no sewer replacement pitch. If cleaning is the fix, cleaning is what we quote.
