Drain and sewer diagnostics in Ogden, Utah

Clear the cause. Not just the clog.

A drain that clears and comes back was never really fixed. If yours keeps backing up, something is causing it, and finding that is the job.

What is the drain doing?

What is the drain doing?

Worth saying up front. If the pipe turns out to be healthy, we will tell you that. We do not turn a drain cleaning call into a sewer replacement pitch.

Three patterns that usually mean something

Most recurring drain problems announce themselves the same few ways. What the drain is doing narrows down where the trouble is before anyone opens anything.

01

Clears, then returns within weeks

The blockage moved, the cause stayed. Usually scale, roots, or a low spot holding water.

02

Gurgles when a different fixture drains

Air is being pulled through standing water. That normally puts the restriction past the branch, in the main.

03

Slow for years, never fully blocked

Rarely a clog at all. Hard water scale and grease film narrowing the pipe from the inside.

Drains and sewers only

Not a plumbing company with a drain page. This is the whole job.

A camera on recurring calls

If a drain has backed up before, guessing at it twice is not a plan.

Northern Utah homes

Cast iron, clay lateral, hard water scale, roots. The local failure modes.

Look first. Then clear it.

Most drain calls run the same four steps. The order matters: everything we recommend comes after we have seen the line, not before.

  1. 01

    Ask

What is the drain doing, which fixtures are affected, how old is the house, has it happened before. Five minutes on the phone usually narrows it to two possibilities.

You get a straight answer about whether this needs a visit.

  2. 02

    Look

On anything recurring, the camera goes in before the cable does. We find where the restriction is and what is causing it.

You watch the same screen we do.

  3. 03

    Clear

Cable, jetter or descaler, chosen for what we actually found. Grease gets cut out, not punched through.

The line is open, and the cause is gone with it.

  4. 04

    Show

A second camera pass after the work, so you can see the pipe you are left with, including when the answer is that nothing is wrong with it.

You know the condition of your line, not just that the water moved.

The right tool, which is not always the biggest one

Cable, jetter, descaler and camera each solve a different problem. Using the wrong one costs you money and leaves the cause in the pipe.

  • Cable

Opens a blockage fast. Good for hair and soft obstructions. It punches through grease rather than removing it, so on its own it rarely stops a repeat.

  • Hydro jetting

Scours the pipe wall back to full diameter. The right answer for grease and sludge. Wrong answer for a pipe already cracked, which is why we look first.

  • Camera inspection

Tells you which of the above you actually need, and whether the pipe is sound. You watch the same screen we do.

  • Descaling

For cast iron that has closed up with rust and mineral scale. Common in older Ogden homes and often mistaken for a clog.

Scale build-up inside cast iron. Common in Ogden homes built before 1970, and regularly mistaken for a clog.

What the camera actually shows

You watch the same screen we do. These are the three things we find most often behind a drain that will not stay clear.

Root intrusion. Roots at a clay joint. Common under mature trees on Ogden's older streets.

One line, before and after

Before: interior of the drain line.
Before
After: interior of the drain line.
After
The call
Kitchen and basement floor drain both backing up. Third time in fourteen months. The line had been cabled twice by someone else and cleared each time for about six weeks.
What we found
Camera showed grease and soap build-up coating the wall of a cast iron branch, starting about 18 feet out and running most of the way to the main. The pipe itself was sound. No breaks, no separation, no roots.
What it took
Jetted the branch back to full diameter rather than cabling it again. Cabling had been boring a channel through the coating, which is why it kept closing back up within weeks.
Outcome
Line running full bore on the second camera pass. No pipe replaced and none needed. The customer had been quoted for a lateral replacement by another company the month before.

Illustrative. These images show what fouled and cleaned cast iron look like, not a specific customer's line, and the job details below are placeholders. Both are replaced once a real job is supplied with the customer's permission.

What we do when the pipe is fine

No fault found

Sometimes the camera goes down a line that has backed up three times and finds nothing wrong with the pipe. Grease, or roots at one joint, or a fixture that was never vented properly. The pipe itself is sound.

When that happens we clean it properly, tell you what caused it, and leave. That is the whole visit. A recurring clog is not evidence that a sewer needs replacing, and we are not going to say it is.

Tell us what the drain is doing

Describe the symptom and we will tell you what usually causes it. If it needs a look, we will come and look.

No call-out pressure and no sewer replacement pitch. If cleaning is the fix, cleaning is what we quote.
