Backing up right now

Emergency Drain Service in Ogden, Utah

If waste water is coming back into the house, the first job is to stop that. Diagnosis matters, and it comes second.

When this is the answer

01

Waste water coming back into the house

Stop using water and call. This one does not wait.

02

A toilet overflowing on every flush

The line below it is blocked, not the toilet itself.

03

Sewage at a basement floor drain

The main is blocked and the lowest opening is taking the overflow.

04

No drains working at all

The main is fully blocked, usually at a single point.

Drains and sewers only

Not a plumbing company with a drain page. This is the whole job.

A camera on recurring calls

If a drain has backed up before, guessing at it twice is not a plan.

Northern Utah homes

Cast iron, clay lateral, hard water scale, roots. The local failure modes.

What to do before we arrive

Stop putting water into the system. That means no taps, no washing machine, no dishwasher, and no flushing if the toilet is involved. Every liter that goes in has to come out somewhere, and right now it is coming out where you do not want it.

If the backup is at a basement floor drain, move anything you care about off the floor. If you can reach the water shut-off comfortably, knowing where it is helps.

What happens when we get there

Flow first. On an active backup the priority is getting the line open so the house is usable again. Diagnosis follows, and it follows quickly, because the state of the line right after it has backed up is informative.

Once it is open we will tell you what caused it. If it is something that will recur, we would rather say so now than have you call again next month.

What we will not do at two in the morning

We will not use an emergency as leverage. Nobody makes a good decision about a five-figure excavation at midnight with water on the floor, and quoting one in that moment is a sales tactic rather than a diagnosis.

We will get the line open, tell you what we found, and put any larger conversation off until you have had a chance to think about it in daylight.

What it costs out of hours

Out-of-hours work costs more than scheduled work, and we will tell you the rate before coming out rather than presenting it afterwards. If the situation can safely wait until morning, we will say so and it will cost you less.

Why we diagnose the next day

The state of a line immediately after a backup is informative, so we note what we see. But nobody makes a good decision about a large job at midnight with water on the floor, and quoting one in that moment is a sales tactic rather than a diagnosis.

Preventing the repeat

Most emergency backups are the end of a process that has been running for months. Once the immediate problem is dealt with, the conversation worth having is what caused it, because that is the one that stops it happening again.

Look first. Then clear it.

Most drain calls run the same four steps. The order matters: everything we recommend comes after we have seen the line, not before.

  1. 01

    Ask

What is the drain doing, which fixtures are affected, how old is the house, has it happened before. Five minutes on the phone usually narrows it to two possibilities.

You get a straight answer about whether this needs a visit.

  2. 02

    Look

On anything recurring, the camera goes in before the cable does. We find where the restriction is and what is causing it.

You watch the same screen we do.

  3. 03

    Clear

Cable, jetter or descaler, chosen for what we actually found. Grease gets cut out, not punched through.

The line is open, and the cause is gone with it.

  4. 04

    Show

A second camera pass after the work, so you can see the pipe you are left with, including when the answer is that nothing is wrong with it.

You know the condition of your line, not just that the water moved.

What the camera actually shows

You watch the same screen we do. These are the three things we find most often behind a drain that will not stay clear.

Root intrusion. Roots at a clay joint. Common under mature trees on Ogden's older streets.

Mineral scale. Cast iron closed down by hard water scale. Regularly mistaken for a clog.

Questions we get asked

What counts as an emergency?

Waste water coming back into the house, or no working drains at all. A slow sink can wait until morning and will cost you less if it does.

What should I do while I wait?

Stop putting water into the system, and move anything valuable away from the affected drain.

Will you diagnose it the same night?

We will get the line open and tell you what we found. Anything larger is better decided in daylight.

Do you charge more for emergency work?

Out-of-hours work costs more than scheduled work. We will tell you the rate before we come out, not after.

Can I stop it happening again?

Usually, once we know what caused it. That is the conversation worth having once the immediate problem is dealt with.

Not sure if this is what you have?

Tell us what the drain is doing. We will tell you what usually causes that pattern before you commit to anything.

What is the drain doing?

What is the drain doing?

Worth saying up front. If the pipe turns out to be healthy, we will tell you that. We do not turn a drain cleaning call into a sewer replacement pitch.

What we do when the pipe is fine

No fault found

Sometimes the camera goes down a line that has backed up three times and finds nothing wrong with the pipe. Grease, or roots at one joint, or a fixture that was never vented properly. The pipe itself is sound.

When that happens we clean it properly, tell you what caused it, and leave. That is the whole visit. A recurring clog is not evidence that a sewer needs replacing, and we are not going to say it is.

Tell us what the drain is doing

Describe the symptom and we will tell you what usually causes it. If it needs a look, we will come and look.

No call-out pressure and no sewer replacement pitch. If cleaning is the fix, cleaning is what we quote.
